Is a Memory Foam Pillow Good for Your Neck?
A memory foam pillow can support your neck, but the foam is not what decides that. Height is. A pillow that is too high or too low for your shoulders and neck will strain you in any material.
Key takeaways
- Memory foam is a material, not a fit. Pillow height has to match your shoulder width, neck and sleeping position.
- In a pilot EMG study of 15 adults, a pillow height matched to shoulder width produced the lowest neck and shoulder muscle activity during side sleeping (Jiao et al., 2025).
- A Pillowise fitting picks one of 7 sizes from three measurements, plus sleeping position and mattress firmness. The measurement is free at a provider near you.
Does memory foam make a pillow better for the neck?
Not by itself. Two memory foam pillows can differ a lot in height, and the wrong one leaves your neck tilted for hours. The foam decides how the pillow feels. The height decides how your neck is positioned.
Your body sets the right height. A side sleeper with broad shoulders needs more height than a back sleeper with a slim build. For more on this, read side sleeping, shoulder width and pillow height.
What should you look at besides the foam?
- Sleeping position: side, back or stomach. Use the position you fall asleep in.
- Mattress firmness: soft, medium or firm. If you don't know, choose medium. That also applies to memory foam mattresses and hotel beds.
- Body size: shoulder width, neck circumference and neck height.

What does the research not show?
The pillow height studies we know of are small and mostly involve healthy adults. They show an association between height and muscle activity, not a cure for neck pain. A pillow is an adjunct to care, not a treatment. If you have numbness, arm pain, weakness or pain after an injury, see your own provider first.
How does Pillowise approach memory foam?
The core of a Pillowise pillow is 100% premium Dutch memory foam. It is non-toxic, latex-free and made in the Netherlands. The foam adapts quickly and stays soft at lower temperatures. The standard pillow measures 22 x 14 in. The cover is 40% Tencel and 60% polyester, removable and machine washable at 104°F (40°C).
The fit comes from the Pillowise algorithm, which combines five factors and picks one of 7 sizes. It indicates the right size for about 95% of people. Weight is not part of it, so a heavier person who sinks deeper into the pillow may need a lower one. Your provider checks how you lie on the pillow and adjusts if needed. See what happens in a pillow fitting and the Pillowise pillows.
You get 7-10 days to adjust. Within 30 days of purchase you can exchange the pillow for another size or return it for a refund. Return shipping is paid by you. A 5-year warranty covers material and production faults.
