Is a Contour Pillow Right for Your Neck?
A contour pillow has a curved shape, usually a dip for the head and a raised edge for the neck, meant to support the neck's natural curve. The shape only helps if the height fits your shoulder width, neck and sleeping position.
Key takeaways
- "Contour" describes the shape of a pillow. Whether it fits you depends on its height.
- In a pilot EMG study of 15 adults, a pillow height matched to shoulder width produced the lowest neck and shoulder muscle activity during side sleeping (Jiao et al., 2025).
- Pillowise picks one of 7 sizes from three measurements plus sleeping position and mattress firmness. The measurement is free at a provider near you.
What does a contour pillow do?
The raised edge sits under the neck and the lower center holds the head. The aim is to keep the neck from bending up or down while you sleep. A stock contour pillow comes in one height, though. That height can be too high for a narrow-shouldered back sleeper and too low for a wide-shouldered side sleeper.
Does the shape matter more than the height?
In our view, height comes first. On your side, the shoulder is the widest point between your head and the mattress, and the pillow has to fill that gap. We cover this in side sleeping, shoulder width and pillow height. The Jiao study was a small pilot. It does not show that a pillow relieves neck pain. For more on the research, see adjusting pillow height for neck pain: clinical studies.
Will a contour pillow fix my neck pain?
Not on its own. A fitted pillow is an adjunct to care, not a treatment. If you have pain that lasts, numbness or tingling in your arms, or pain after an injury, see your own provider. If you wake up stiff and suspect your pillow, these signs of the wrong pillow height are a good place to start.
How does Pillowise fit a pillow?
A provider takes three measurements: shoulder width, neck circumference and neck height. We add your sleeping position (the position you fall asleep in) and your mattress firmness (soft, medium or firm). The Pillowise algorithm then picks one of 7 sizes. The system indicates the right size for about 95% of people. Weight is not part of it, so your provider checks your position on the pillow and adjusts if needed. You can read the full process in what happens in a pillow fitting.
The core is premium Dutch memory foam, non-toxic and latex-free. The cover is removable and machine washable at 104°F (40°C). Give the pillow 7-10 days to adjust. Within 30 days of purchase you can exchange it for another size or return it for a refund. Return shipping is paid by the customer.
