Physical Therapy Retail Products: Why a Fitted Pillow Belongs on the List

The best physical therapy retail products are the ones that carry your care plan into the patient's home, and sleep position is one of the few areas where a patient spends hours every night without you. A fitted pillow is one such product: it is measured in your clinic, sold under your name and needs no shelf of inventory.

    Key takeaways

    • Retail in a PT clinic works best when each product has a clinical reason and a clear place in the home advice you already give.
    • Pillowise is sold only through licensed providers, not on Amazon and not in retail stores, so your clinic does not compete with online discount prices.
    • The fitting uses three measurements plus sleeping position and mattress firmness. You can start with no minimum order, and Pillowise can drop ship to the patient in your clinic's name.

What makes a good retail product in a physical therapy clinic?

Patients trust a product more when it comes from the person who examined them. That is also the limit: a product earns its place only if you can explain why it fits this patient. A good retail product usually meets four tests:

    • Clinical reason. You can explain in two sentences how it supports the care plan.
    • Fit to the patient. It is chosen from measurements, not from a generic label.
    • Low operational load. It does not tie up cash in stock or staff time at the front desk.
    • Protected price. The patient cannot find it cheaper on a marketplace the same evening.

Many clinics, especially those with cash-based services, already sell bands, foam rollers or lumbar supports. Sleep products are the gap in most of those lists, even though sleep position comes up in nearly every neck and shoulder history.

Why does sleep position belong in home advice?

You give a home exercise program and advice on ergonomics at the desk. The hours in bed are the other long stretch of the day. A side sleeper's head rests above the mattress by roughly the width of the shoulder. If the pillow does not fill that gap, the neck tilts toward or away from the mattress for hours. Back and stomach sleepers have a different gap, which calls for a different height.

We covered the evidence in other posts, so we will not repeat it here. See side sleeping, shoulder width and pillow height and adjusting pillow height for neck pain: clinical studies. For the clinic side of the conversation, read elevating physical therapy outcomes through sleep ergonomics.

How is a fitted pillow different from a stock pillow?

A pillow should fit the body, like a shoe size. One stock height cannot suit every shoulder width, neck and sleeping position. A patient who asks "which pillow should I buy?" usually gets an answer based on opinion or on a brand's label. A fitted pillow lets you answer with measurements.

How does Pillowise approach the fitting?

Pillowise picks one of 7 sizes from five inputs:

    1. Shoulder width
    2. Neck circumference at C4/C5
    3. Neck height, from the mastoid process diagonally to the outer edge of the acromion
    4. Sleeping position: side, back or stomach. This is the position in which the patient falls asleep. If the patient is unsure, we use side.
    5. Mattress firmness: soft, medium or firm. If the patient does not know, choose medium.

The Pillowise algorithm combines these factors. Two people with very different bodies can end up with the same size. The system indicates the right size for about 95% of people. Weight is not part of the calculation. A heavier person sinks deeper into the mattress and may need a lower pillow, so check the position on the pillow and adjust where needed, for example during pregnancy. It is best if a second person takes the measurements. You can measure by hand or with the PillowScan on a mobile device. For the full walk-through, see what happens in a pillow fitting.

The pillow itself has a core of 100% premium Dutch memory foam, non-toxic and latex-free, made in the Netherlands. The standard size is 22 x 14 in. The cover is 40% Tencel and 60% polyester, removable and machine washable at 104°F (40°C).

What do the products cost the patient?

These are suggested retail prices. Your clinic sets its own final price.

    ProductSuggested retail price
    Travel pillow (Pillow ToGo, 13.5 x 14 in)$119
    Standard pillow$159
    Queen pillow$199

Resellers make a healthy margin on these prices. We do not publish wholesale prices or income examples on public pages, and we will not promise what a clinic will earn. That depends on how many patients you fit and how you present the product. Patients with an FSA or HSA can ask their plan administrator whether a purchase qualifies. We do not promise eligibility.

Every pillow has a 30-day comfort guarantee. After a 7-10 day adjustment period, the patient can exchange it for another size or return it within 30 days of purchase. The patient pays return shipping. There is also a 5-year warranty on material and production faults.

How does it work in a clinic day to day?

    1. Raise it in the visit. When a patient reports morning stiffness or neck pain at night, ask how they fall asleep and what mattress they use. This fits into the home advice you already give. For ideas on wording, see strategies for improving morning stiffness.
    2. Measure. Take the three measurements and enter the sleeping position and mattress firmness in the online software.
    3. Order. Hand over a pillow from the display, or order a single pillow and have it drop shipped.
    4. Follow up. Check the position on the pillow at the next visit. Adjust the size if needed within the comfort guarantee.

For providers: what does it take to start?

You register on the provider page. Accounts are activated manually after we validate your license. After that:

    • No inventory. Pillowise can drop ship directly to the patient, in the name of your clinic.
    • No minimum order. Order what you need, including single pillows by drop ship.
    • No Amazon. Selling Pillowise on Amazon is not allowed. It is not sold on Amazon or in retail stores, so your clinic is not undercut by online discount prices.
    • Display Package Deal, $449. It includes a display, all 6 pillows, posters and a banner, measuring tapes, full use of the online software, and one complimentary pillow.
    • Extras in the reseller shop. These include patient brochures (pack of 25), and measuring pads and tapes.

When should you not recommend a pillow?

A fitted pillow is an adjunct to care, not a treatment for a neck or shoulder condition. It will not replace your assessment, and it will not help every patient. A pillow cannot address neurological signs, unexplained night pain or a mattress that is clearly worn out. Those need your clinical judgment first. Position the pillow as one part of the home plan, and say so to the patient. That honesty is also what protects your credibility as a retailer. Note, too, that Pillowise is not a replacement for the patient's own provider for any condition outside your scope.
