What Is a Sleep Calculator, and Can It Help With a Stiff Neck?
A sleep calculator is an online tool that suggests a bedtime or wake-up time based on when you need to get up. It does not measure your sleep, and it cannot tell you whether your pillow fits your neck.
Key takeaways
- A sleep calculator helps you plan when to go to bed. It does not assess how well you sleep.
- If you wake up stiff, timing is only one possible cause. Pillow height is another, and no timing tool can check it.
- Pillowise works like a calculator for pillow size: three measurements, your sleeping position and your mattress firmness point to one of 7 sizes.
What does a sleep calculator actually do?
Most sleep calculators take one input, usually your wake-up time, and count backward to suggest a bedtime. The result is an estimate based on averages. It does not know how long you take to fall asleep, how often you wake, or how your neck feels in the morning.
What can't a sleep calculator tell you?
It can't tell you why you wake up with a stiff neck or sore shoulder. A pillow that is too high or too low leaves the neck tilted for hours, however well you time your night. Our post on how to tell if your pillow is the wrong height lists the signs to look for. Habits such as late coffee also affect sleep, and we cover them in caffeine and sleep: how late is too late.
Is there a calculator for pillow size?
Pillowise uses an algorithm that does something similar for your body. It combines five factors:
- Shoulder width
- Neck circumference
- Neck height
- Preferred sleeping position (side, back or stomach)
- Mattress firmness (soft, medium or firm)
From these the Pillowise algorithm picks one of 7 sizes. The system indicates the right size for about 95% of people. Weight is not part of it. A heavier person sinks deeper into the mattress and may need a lower pillow, so the provider checks your position on the pillow and adjusts if needed. You can see the measuring points on our size page, and what happens in a pillow fitting walks through the visit.
A fitted pillow is an adjunct to care, not a treatment. If you have ongoing pain, numbness or tingling in your arms, see your own provider.
