Retail Products for Massage Therapists: What to Look For and Why a Fitted Pillow Qualifies
A good retail product for a licensed massage therapist supports the session without making claims beyond your scope, protects your pricing from online discounting, and does not tie up money in stock. A fitted pillow, measured in your practice and shipped in your practice's name, meets those criteria.
Key takeaways
- Judge any retail line on four points: scope fit, price protection, inventory burden and how well you can explain it to a client.
- Pillowise is sold only through licensed providers (chiropractors, physical therapists and LMTs). It is not sold on Amazon or in retail stores, and Amazon resale is not allowed.
- There is no minimum order. You can drop ship single pillows in your practice's name, or start with the $449 display package.
What should a massage therapist look for in a retail product?
Lotions, hot packs and foam rollers are easy to stock, but many can be bought online at any price. Before you add a product, check it against four questions:
- Scope. Can you describe it without diagnosing or promising to treat a condition? Check your state board's rules on retail sales and on the language you use.
- Price protection. Is the product sold in stores or on Amazon at a discount? If so, your client can compare prices before leaving your table.
- Inventory. Do you have to buy stock up front, or can the product ship directly to the client?
- Explanation. Can you show the client why this product fits their body? A product with a measurement behind it is easier to explain than one with a general promise.
Why does a pillow belong in a massage practice?
You already work with the neck and shoulders. Sleep position is the part of the picture a client takes home every night. A pillow that is too high or too low for a given body changes where the head rests relative to the shoulders for hours at a time.
Pillowise's position is simple: a pillow should fit the body, like a shoe size. One stock height cannot suit every shoulder width, neck and sleeping position. We position a fitted pillow as an adjunct to care, not a treatment. It does not replace your work, and it does not claim to resolve a neck or shoulder condition.
The research is early. In a pilot EMG study of 15 adults, a pillow height matched to shoulder width produced the lowest neck and shoulder muscle activity during side sleeping (Jiao et al., 2025). The sample was small and did not include people with shoulder pain, so it does not show that a fitted pillow relieves pain. We cover it in side sleeping, shoulder width and pillow height.

How does Pillowise choose a pillow size?
The fitting uses three body measurements:
- Shoulder width
- Neck circumference, taken at C4/C5 (below the Adam's apple for men)
- Neck height, from the mastoid process diagonally to the outer edge of the acromion
It then adds the client's sleeping position (the position in which they fall asleep: side, back or stomach) and mattress firmness (soft, medium or firm). If the client does not know the firmness, choose medium. If they have no idea how they fall asleep, choose side.
The Pillowise algorithm combines these five factors and picks one of 7 sizes. Two people with very different bodies can end up with the same size. The system indicates the right size for about 95% of people. Weight is not part of the calculation. A heavier person sinks deeper into the mattress and may need a lower pillow, so check the client's position on the pillow and adjust if needed, for example in pregnancy. Ideally a second person takes the measurements.
You can measure in two ways: with PillowScan on a mobile device, or manually using the guide at What's your size. The fitting is walked through in what happens in a pillow fitting.
What is the pillow itself?
- Standard size: 22 x 14 in.
- Core: 100% premium Dutch memory foam, non-toxic and latex-free, made in the Netherlands.
- Cover: 40% Tencel / 60% polyester, removable and machine washable at 104°F (40°C).
- Travel option: the Pillow ToGo, 13.5 x 14 in, with a compact travel bag.
Clients are covered by a 30-day comfort guarantee. After giving the pillow 7-10 days to adjust, it can be exchanged for another size or returned for a refund within 30 days of purchase. Return shipping is paid by the customer. There is also a 5-year warranty on material and production faults. The full range is on the pillows page.
For providers: how does it work in a massage practice?
Pillowise sells only through licensed healthcare providers. That affects your retail position in three ways.
- No online price competition. Pillowise is not sold on Amazon or in retail stores, and selling it on Amazon is not allowed. Your clients cannot find a discounted copy next to your price.
- Suggested retail prices. Travel pillow $119, standard pillow $159, queen pillow $199. You set your own final price, and resellers make a healthy margin.
- No stock to carry. There is no minimum order. You order what you need, including single pillows by drop ship. Pillowise can ship directly to the client in the name of your practice.
What is in the $449 display package?
If you want the fitting visible in your treatment area or lobby, the Display Package Deal is $449. It includes:
- A display
- All 6 pillows
- Posters and a banner
- Measuring tapes
- Full use of the online software
- One complimentary pillow
Patient brochures (pack of 25), measuring pads and tapes are available in the reseller shop. You do not need the display to start. Drop shipping single pillows works without it.
How do you get started?
- Register. Sign up on the provider page. Accounts are activated manually after your license is validated.
- Choose your setup. Take the $449 display package, or order single pillows as you need them.
- Measure. Take the three measurements with PillowScan or the manual guide, and record sleeping position and mattress firmness.
- Order. Place the order for the client. It can ship directly to them in your practice's name.
What are the limits?
A fitted pillow will not help every client, and it does not replace care. Keep your language within your scope: you measure and recommend a fit, you do not diagnose or promise relief. If a client has persistent neck or arm symptoms, numbness, or pain that wakes them at night, refer them to their own physician or other qualified provider. The measurement is a starting point, and the client should give the pillow a few days to adjust before judging it.
